Sharad’s journey has been challenging since the age of two as a result of the polio that struck him due to spurious vaccine. The struggle began at the tender age of 18 months when his mother (Kumkum) and father (Surendra Kumar) found out that Sharad was suffering from polio. When Sharad reached the age of 4, he was sent to a boarding school for his education. His father had made up his mind to bring Sharad up as a normal child. Sharad’s interest in High Jump came from watching his own brother, who was a record holder in the school. The idea of breaking his brother’s school record encouraged him to take up the high jump event more seriously; and, ever since, high jump has helped him break barriers both natural and those forged by the society.

Sharat’s life changed upside down when he met a traumatic accident in 2015 and lost his left leg. He spent 2 years in bed trying to make peace with his new life. He could see his entire life shattering into pieces slowly in front of him. He started running out of money soon and lost a lot of relationships as well. In the bottomless pit of darkness and depression, sports acted as a ray of light for him. He used to go to stadiums to watch Paralympic sports to divert his mind. Watching people like him working so hard motivated him. He decided to start playing badminton and found a new purpose in life in the sport. He overcame all the obstacles he faced and later represented India in the Paralympics.
