1. Problem Statement
The Speak UP is a place for you to demonstrate your scientific skills in any topic of your own choice. You will be judged on the basis of your understanding of the topic, the depth of the study done on that topic, the clarity with which it is explained to the audience.

2.1 Competition Details
- The competition would require you to present a talk on topics which are general but yet involve a deep understanding of the science behind the phenomenon.
- The talk should last for a maximum of 12 minutes plus 5 minutes for Q/A session. Computer Aided Presentations, Videos, Transparencies are not allowed. Anything else can be used for aiding your explanations.
- Six participants will be selected from the abstract stage and will be invited to Techfest 2009 for the talk.
2.2 Judging Criterion
The topics chosen should:- Not be too general or too specific for a lay person to understand e.g., why should we switch to solar energy instead of petrol (too general) or hyperstrings in multiverses (too specific).
- Be interesting enough for people to sit and learn about.
It is advisable that the topic is not related to the course material.

- Ant Colony Optimization
- Infinity+1 and Other Surreal Numbers
- The Earth is round, almost.
- How to ride your bicycle hands free.
- Dynamics of Hula Hooping
2.3 Abstract Submission
- Participants should mail their abstracts with the registration number as the subject and preferably in .doc or .pdf format.
- The abstract should be concise and to the point and should not be more than 700 words
- The first sheet should only contain title of the project, registration number, name of the participant and their respective institute.
- The information in the abstract should be descriptive and not vague. It is recommended that vital aspects of the talk that require special focus be mentioned as points.

3.1 General Rules
- For screening purposes, a pre-event abstract, in a standard format, has to be submitted. It is very important that abstract should be mailed to speakup[at]techfest[dot]org with the subject 'Speak UP abstract Reg. No._____'. Do not forget to mention the registration number.
- The last date for submission of abstracts is 1st January, 2009 and any registered entry that fails to submit an abstract by this date will be disqualified from the event.
- Short listed teams will be informed by mail before 15th January, 2009. A list of short listed teams will also be displayed on the Techfest website.
- The organizers reserve all rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. All changes will be highlighted on the website and registered participants shall be informed by email.
- The decision of the judges and the organizers will be final and binding.
3.2 Team Specifications
The event is a single member event.
3.3 Eligibility
All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in Speak Up at Techfest 2009.
3.4 Certificate Policy
- Certificate of Excellence will be given to all winners.
- Certificates of Participation will be given to all teams that are selected after the abstract submission and are present during Techfest 2009.
