Panel Discussion: Open Source, Free & Proprietary Softwares

"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones."

Linus Torvalds, before going on to launch Linux

And thus was born the greatest question to have faced the computer industry since its birth. To go the Open Source way or not.

Open source software is software that comes with permission for anyone to use, copy, and distribute, either verbatim or with modifications. This development method harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. Thousands of programmers, across the globe now spend their free time or work time, hacking on an open-source project.

The big question however, is whether Open Source products really do everything their proprietary brethren (software you pay for) do? After all, Linux, the darling of Open Source developers, has been called by experts as "a pain in the butt". And can the implicit trust over Open Source win over the commercial attractiveness of Proprietary Software? And if Open Source is the answer, where is the problem?

These questions represent just the tip of the iceberg of what Techfest, 2008 would like to put in front of you via 'Panel Discussion: Open Source, Free & Proprietary Softwares'.
