In 1952 when A.S. Douglas did his PhD at the University of Cambridge little did he know that he had ushered in a new era in the computer industry which would be worth over 100 Billion USD by 2010. Douglas created the first graphical computer game - a version of Tic-Tac-Toe and since then games have gone a long way from being educative to being interactive and fun. Techfest 2009 gives you a chance to be a part of this unstoppable gaming revolution by making your own flash version of CS and AOE in .fla.

1. Problem Statement
Given a theme and a time of 5 hours, design an educative and entertaining flash game.

2.1 Competition details:
- The theme will be disclosed on the day of the competition.
- The theme will be disclosed 1 hour before the competition starts and the participants can use this time to conceptualize their game, etc.
- Participants will be provided with computers after the above mentioned hour.
- Games must be flash based only. The use of Shockwave, Java etc. platforms are not allowed. Participants may use flash authoring tools like Macromedia Flash, Plasma, Swish, or similar products.
- Participants are only allowed to submit as many games as they like, but only one version of that game. The participants must make sure that their game is finished and that they are satisfied with the game' s performance and playability. After submitting a game, participants will not be able to make revisions or upload bug fixes. Participants are free to submit as many as you like however we strongly advise that they stick to one game only.
2.2 Judging Criterion
Only the completed games will be considered for judging.
The following criteria will be adhered to while judging. The weightage of each criterion is mentioned in the brackets.
- Education: How educative the game is, how does it explain the fundamentals of the theme etc. (25%)
- Entertainment (Concept/ Story): How entertaining the games is, how motivating the game is to encourage the player to finish the game, how creative the game and objects used in it are. How good the concept is, etc. (40%)
- Interaction: How does the player interact with the game, what are the buttons required. How innovative is the interaction is, how involved should the gamer be to play the games, how addictive the game is, etc. (30%)
- Overall appeal of the game (5%)
2.3 Judging criteria for Elimination rounds (online rounds)
There will be 3 online eliminations, based on different themes and a participant can enter in to the finals through any of the elimination rounds. It is not compulsory to participate in all of them.
The duration of the elimination rounds will be 21 days each.
The following criteria will be adhered to while judging. The weightage of each criterion is mentioned in the brackets.
- Education: How educative the game is, how does it explain the fundamentals of the theme. (25%)
- Entertainment (Concept/ Story): How entertaining the games is, how motivating the game is to encourage the player to finish the game, the creativity of the game and characters in the game. How good the concept is, etc. (30%)
- Interaction: How does the player interact with the game, what are the buttons required. How innovative is the interaction is, how involved should the gamer be to play the games, how addictive the game is, etc. (30%)
- Design and look of the game: How does it look, how do the looks compel a player to play the game and how well the graphics etc .are maintained throughout the game. (15%)
There will be an audience poll which would also carry some weightage.

3.1 General Rules
- The teams must adhere to the spirit of HEALTHY COMPETITION. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any team found indulging in misbehavior.
- Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all.
- The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website and notified to the registered participants.
3.2 Team Specifications
A team may consist of a maximum of 2 members. Participants are advised to form teams before registration, since the competition is essentially a team event.
3.3 Eligibility
All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in .fla at Techfest 2009.
3.4 Certificate Policy
- Certificate of Excellence will be given to all the winners.
- Certificates of Participation will be given to all the teams that are able to clear the elimination round at Techfest 2009.
